Difference between Stanch and Staunch

Stanch means to block something.

• They’re allocating money to stanch the flow of illegal drugs.

Staunch means dedicated or loyal. It can also mean watertight or sound (a staunch ship).

• Bob is always a staunch supporter of that political party.
